This painting by British born American painter Edmund Coates appears to be based in part on J. M. W. Turner's painting, Ancient Italy - Ovid banished from Rome. Turner's painting was exhibited at the Royal Academy of Art in London in 1838. It was later engraved by Turner himself as well as by others. As was the practice in the 19th century, artists made engravings based on paintings as a way of popularizing them with wider audiences. These engravings were frequently circulated in the United States. It seems likely that Coates worked from one of the engraved versions of the painting. The historical subject appealed to Coates, and he painted several versions of it. |
